NDIS Support

Independent Support for NDIS Participants

Experienced Support. Genuine Connection. Your Life, Your Way.

If you're an NDIS participant, you may have flexibility in choosing who supports you.

Many participants value the consistency and personal connection that comes from working with one experienced, independent support worker.

I'm Samuel, an independent support worker with more than 9 years of experience.

This page explains how support may work for NDIS participants. How support can be arranged depends on your individual circumstances and how your plan is managed.

Independent Support and the NDIS

An independent support worker provides support directly to individuals rather than through a large agency or registered NDIS provider. For many NDIS participants, this can mean more consistency, flexibility and a closer working relationship — across areas like assistance with daily life, community participation and building everyday capacity.

Whether an independent support worker is the right fit, and how support can be arranged, depends on how your NDIS plan is managed.

How Your Plan Is Managed Matters

The way your NDIS plan is managed affects how you can engage support workers. In general:

Self-managedSelf-managed participants generally have the most flexibility and can often choose their own support workers, including independent providers.
Plan-managedPlan-managed participants have a plan manager who handles payments and may also have flexibility to engage independent support workers, depending on their plan.
Agency-managed (NDIA-managed)Agency-managed participants generally need to use NDIS-registered providers. Arrangements depend on your plan.
Not sure?If you're unsure how your plan is managed, we can talk it through and work out whether my support may be suitable.

This is general information only. How support can be arranged always depends on your individual plan and circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an independent support worker with my NDIS plan?

Self-managed and plan-managed participants often have flexibility to choose their own support workers, including independent providers. Agency-managed participants generally need registered providers. It depends on your individual plan and circumstances.

What's the difference between self-managed, plan-managed and agency-managed?

Self-managed means you manage your own funding. Plan-managed means a plan manager handles payments for you. Agency-managed (NDIA-managed) means the NDIA manages your funding and you generally use registered providers.

Are you an NDIS-registered provider?

Independent support workers commonly work with self-managed and plan-managed participants. If registration is relevant to your situation, contact me and we can discuss whether my support suits your circumstances.

What NDIS supports can you provide?

Depending on your circumstances, support may include in-home support, daily living support, community access, social support and companionship, disability support and respite. Personal care, medication and clinical supports are not offered.

I'm not sure how my plan is managed. Can you help?

Yes. We can talk through your situation and work out whether my support may be suitable. If needed, your plan manager or support coordinator can also confirm how your plan works.
